Great! Think I understand now. So 48khz is needed for recording (DATs) so you
can have a milder anti-aliasing filter, but not for playback (CDs) since all
you've got to remove is quantisation noise which I presume is much less of
an issue. But unless you're going to do a classy interpolation job you should
keep playback rate = recording rate? (Would anyone like to hazard a guess as
to the effects on a 48khz sample of lineraly interpolating it to a 44.1kHz
sample during playback?)

I finally solved the problems with speech breakup in t7g. I reran INSTALL
and chose Adlib for sound/SB for digi speech. I was previously using SB
for both. While I was at it I changed some other GUS settings too (IRQs,
base address) just to make sure! I was so pleased with myself that I've
been playing 7th Guest all evening! It's amazing B-)

Has anyone got the Microsoft Flight Simulator 4 Sound UPgrade
to work with SBOS 2.08? With the -o2 option I get the effects
but the engine noise only lasts a few seconds and then cuts off.
In addition, all sound seems to come from the right channel and
there are strange whooping noises.

Hi there, can anyone outthere help me with my problem?
I got a GUS and a Sonudblaster installed and sometimes it works with
let's say zone66 and sometimes it doesn't
For example Yesterday I could start zone66 up with the music playing
either through my GUS or through my SB but today I can only
use my GUS

I am thinking of upgrading my 486DX-33 ISA motherboard to a VL-BUS.
What I am worried about is that my GUS may not work with the new
one. All I know about it is it is a 7 Slot board with 3 VL-BUS
connectors and uses an UMC chipset. Does someone have a motherboard
like this working with a GUS. Is it just mainly the Opti chipsets I
have to worry about?

I have an Opti VL-BUS MB (486-33) with 2 local bus slots and it has been
working flawlessly with my GUS.
The problem the GUS had was with older chipsets (Opti and others) that had
faulty 16-bit DMA controllers. As far as I know, all UMC chipsets have
worked fine and I don't think having a local bus edition will change
anything.

I read the wcharts digital magazine and I'm damned excited. The GUS seems to
be causing a worldwide orgasm with the REAL coders (screw Sierra and Microsoft)
and I coudn't be more pleased. If you haven't downloaded wcharts.zip, I'd
recommend it. Great reading. :)
Happy Happy GUS GUS...

Just to let you all know, according to Microprose reps on America On-Line, they
state that they have no support or planned support in the near future
for the GUS. The upgrade patch that they talked about was to
upgrade World Circuit to version 1.04 which is the modem play upgrade.
Oh well.....

Hi,
We've baught you ultrasound card, and we are wondering when the
midi box for the card will be release, and how will it cost.
We intend to use it with ENCORE (passeport) midi program, or any
other great midi software. Would it be possible to receive information?
Also, we installed the last version of SBOS, and I have trouble
with XWING, with old version all the sound were present ( some different from
a real Sound Blaster) but with version 2.04. We experience, small lost
in sound. For instance, in the intro when people are talking, some sentence
are not told! Do you have any hint for this?
Also I would like to know if we will soon see software that support
directly the UltraSound, until then the ultrasound isn't used at full potentiel.?
Thank you very much.

My GUS just arrrived today, and I am psyched. I have been a member
of this group for some time, and have tried to keep track of all the
new GUS stuff. However, I have found this to be a daunting task.
So, what I would like is for some kind, knowledgeable, and
sympathetic GUS owner to email me a list of all the newest, best
software for the GUS. For example, what is the newest SBOS version,
3D software, PLAYMIDI, all that stuff, since I am pretty sure the net
has newer stuff than was packaged with my GUS. Also include, if you
can, a list of any cool demos.
I know, I know, there are GUS ftp sites out there, but the simple
fact is I don't know what I want yet. As soon as I know what I want,
rest assured I will be doing some late night downloading.
Thanks!

I'd like to expand on this, using CD players as an example. The problem
is in playback rather than in record. If you playback samples off a CD
at the recorded sample rate then you will get aliases of the audio
bandwidth repeated at intervals of the playback rate all the way up the
frequency band. By using an oversampling technique, some CD players
have effectively moved these aliases way up the band and can then use a
low-order analog filter with good phase behaviour (and which is cheaper !).
The filter then cuts off so far behind the first alias that aliasing is
no longer such a problem. The "missing" samples that should have been
in the recording to make the higher playback rate work are generated by
a tricky little interpolation technique that I don't quite understand.
Soooo, the CD makers are able to use expensive audio gear to record at
44.1KHz (why this rather than 48K I don't know) and us mortals can
afford the cheaper 4 x oversampling on playback CD players. 'Course,
there's lots of other variations, 16 x oversampling, 1-bit D-A's as
well as digital filters.

Linear volume mapping has been addressed in the latest Windows driver
and PlayMIDI. Unfortunately, I think that these missed the mass mail-out
date.

One or two months ago we had a discussion concerning MIDI-Input from
instruments which don't support MIDI (guitar, for example). The point
was, that this wouldn't be possible in real-time, but ....
One of you spoke of a (demo?) program available via FTP, which does
exactly that except that it is very slow, and therefore only can do
this OFFLINE. That means something like a WAV (or VOC, etc.) to MID
conversion.
So please if someone (or the one who wrote about it) knows FTP-
SERVER/LOCATION/NAME of this, please tell me.
Thanks in advance,
SAM
